The Pearl
The Fool sought to visit the elusive object of value known to his friend, the Dreamer, as The Pearl.
Immediately the Fool was swallowed by a giant serpent. Down deep into the belly of the beast he fell through the pink underbelly of the monster. The pink became purple, the purple became red, and the red became black. Then the Fool was on the floor of a fiery place guarded by fanged gargoyles. He said hello to them and asked them if he could see the Pearl. Then the Pearl appeared, a white and quite large pearl, larger than the Fool himself and shaped oblong as an egg. Then a long black dress, with a red interior, of a giant woman skirted over the surface of the egg. By the time the Fool looked up the giantess was gone. He went to the egg and asked what it was to the Dreamer and he was shown that the Dreamer had to make his own egg by virtue of an unknown process. This was The Pearl but it was not the Dreamer’s pearl; for the Dreamer’s pearl was but an infinitesimal reproduction of the Pearl here recorded. Then the Fool was made to go back to sleep.
